The University of Tasmania (UTAS) is a major public university in Tasmania.

UTAS has been progressing its Vision and Model for Admissions since August 2011.

UTAS Requirements

In March 2013, UTAS released a Request for Tender to a restricted vendor list including Dialog Information Technology. Underpinned by its “single admissions model”, UTAS circulated a Business Requirements Specification for a Student Lifecycle Information Management & Services (SLIMS) Online Application.

There were two over-riding concerns for the key stakeholders of the SLIMS application. First, that people applying for a place at the University were given the best possible “applicant experience”. Secondly, that the application provided efficient and ergonomic functionality for staff and agents working within the applications process.

Dialog’s Solution

Dialog’s proposal to UTAS emphasised Dialog’s outstanding success with the Agile Development Methodology, its commitment to high quality outcomes and its ability to deliver fixed price projects.

A key component to Dialog’s offering was its experience in successful remote development projects supported by a strong client communications protocol.

Dialog proposed to UTAS a Microsoft technology web based solution. It was to be remotely developed in Brisbane, with additional resources located in Tasmania to provide a strong technical interface to the University as well as local development, testing, deployment and support capabilities.

UTAS selected Dialog to undertake the project and negotiations proceeded rapidly, permitting Dialog to initiate the project in April 2013.

SLIMS Online Application

The SLIMS Online Application was designed to improve performance and greatly enhance the user experience with a view to increasing the university's market share. This multi-tiered online web application incorporates the latest web security development standards and interfaces with multiple UTAS administrative systems through web services.

It provides the following functions:

  • Student applications for places at UTAS using an online wizard
  • External agencies’ support for student applications
  • UTAS staff administration module to manage the records of applicants, agents and applications.

The technologies used in the development of the web application were .NET Framework 4.0, C#, TSQL, ASP .Net MVC 3, JQuery, HTML5, CSS3, and Bootstrap.

Dialog Delivers

Dialog’s delivery approach included a series of 3 “sprints” with significant and useful component delivery at the completion of each sprint.

Dialog’s communications protocol was an outstanding success, incorporating the high level involvement of people from UTAS, Dialog Tasmania and Dialog Brisbane in daily “stand-up” meetings and other collaborative activities on demand.

UTAS have commended Dialog on the successful project outcomes within agreed time and budgetary constraints.
